Debunking 5 Common Myths About The Popular Sushi!

If you have never tried Japanese cuisine, the long list of dishes and recipes can be overwhelming at first. Most people associate the cuisine with sushi, which remains a cult favorite for its taste and flavors. Today, you can visit an authentic Japanese Restaurant in Aspen and find all popular dishes – ramen, sashimi, tempura, curry and more, but sushi will still top the list. People have many misconceptions about sushi, and in this post, we are debunking some of them!

  1. Sushi must include raw fish.

False. That’s sashimi. Sushi must include Japanese rice seasoned with rice vinegar, and the filling can be anything of your choice. Yes, you can eat veg sushi too. Sashimi, on the other hand, must have raw cuts of meat and fish and is never served with rice.

  1. Sushi must be avoided on certain days of the week.

If you find the right Japanese restaurant, you don’t have to worry about the quality of sushi or fish filling being served. There is no reason why you should avoid sushi some days of the week! As long as you like the taste, have it every day!

  1. Sushi must be always eaten with soy sauce.

Another false statement that must be debunked. Sushi, if cooked the right away, doesn’t require any dipping in the soy sauce – at least it’s not a must. The rice is seasoned with a lot of care, and a bit of wasabi would go a long way.

  1. Sushi must be eaten with chopsticks.

Well, chefs do appreciate when you handle their sushi carefully with chopsticks, but that’s not a must in any way. There is no harm in learning though, and if you are not sure of how to use a pair or would prefer your hands, just don’t bruise the sushi – go easy.

  1. Women cannot make sushi

There is longstanding myth that women have hot hands and therefore, they cannot make sushi. This is plain stupid, if nothing else. In fact, many female chefs in Japan specialize in sushi, and they often do better than men, at least some do. Also, you have no reason to believe gender stereotypes!

Making sushi, however, is an art, and it often takes years of practice to perfect sushi. If you are new to sushi or want to try it for the first time, make sure that you select a restaurant that specializes in traditional Japanese cuisine. The place makes a huge difference.
